So we checked into the hospital Thursday at midnight, which means early Friday morning. By 1 am they had me all settled in and my pitocin running to start my contractions. I was already having them every 5 minutes, I was at 2 centimeters and 90% effaced. Justin and I were already tired so we just relaxed and tried to sleep for a few hours. Through the night I wasn't making much progress. My contractions got bigger and closer together but no further dilation. My nurse asked me at about 6 am if I needed my epidural yet. My contractions were 3 minutes apart and I was breathing through them so I said no. Well she came back a few minutes later and said the anesthesiologist had a couple of Cesareans and if I wanted it sooner rather then later then I should get it now. Plus my doctor was coming to break my water so I could get moving more and I didn't want to feel that, so I agreed. I got my epidural around 7 even though I didn't think I needed it yet and in hind sight I really wish I would have waited. Dr. Healy broke my water at 7:45 am and I finally started to dilate. Everything was slow going until about 2 in the afternoon. I told Justin I felt different. I felt like it was time to push and I needed the nurse now. No one believed me because at noon I was only a 6. Well my nurse came in finally a half hour later and said, "Tara you are right! You are a 10 lets start pushing"! We got going as the other nurses set up and called the doctor. By 3:30 he still hadn't arrived and I felt close. And I was getting sick from all the pushing, all the medicines and no eating. All of a sudden I threw up! Henry's heart rate dropped below 80! A bunch of people came in and cleaned out my mouth, laid me on my side and put me on oxygen. Then they told me to stop pushing! Which was near impossible at this point! When the doctor came a few minutes later he walked in my room and was getting ready when they told him the lady next store was more ready then me and he turned around and went to her first! I was so frustrated. I had my epidural "refilled" because at this point it was wearing off and running out. When he came back a few minutes later he said the baby wasn't down far enough and he would be back in another 45 minutes! I started crying! I was so frustrated I could feel the baby right there! Well finally around 5 he came back and said OK, lets get this baby out, you have been pushing long enough. By this point I was almost ready to give up. I was crying, I had thrown up again, and no matter how much I pushed my button I could still feel the pain. The doctor said the epidural was wearing off again but I was so far that I should just keep going and work with the pain. After a lot of painful pushing causing babies head to get close but go back the doctor asked if I had ever broken my tail bone or coccyx. He said it was in the "wrong spot" and babies head couldn't get past it. I bruised it snowboarding once but never broke it so I was confused. At this point Justin was amazing! He was holding my legs, down with the doctor watching Henry crown and giving me a pep talk all at the the same time! Finally the doctor said he had to use the vacuum. The baby had been in the birth canal for way too long now and I couldn't get him over my bone without help. So with a few more pushes and the help of the vacuum we got him out at 5:38pm. They put him right on my chest and I immediately felt like I already knew who he was. It was amazing! The second Justin saw him he was in tears. I was already crying, but Justin started to bawl his eyes out. They let him cut the cord which was great, I am so glad he did. He was hugging and kissing me and then went to watch them work on the baby. His first Apga
r score was a 5. He was a little traumatized by the long labor and was hesitant to breath and was grunting. But after some skin to skin contact with mommy he was a 9 and doing great. Dr Healy was amazing, (even though he took forever to get there)! He said afterword I was very close to a Cesarean and now my tailbone is cracked from labor. It was pretty crazy and he said I did the best I could with that road block. After we were both cleaned up Justin's parents, his sister and my sisters came in to see us. I instantly had this relief and my pain was replaced by endorphins. Henry nursed immediately and has a great latch. I let the nursery take him that night and bring him to me only for feedings. Justin and I both needed our sleep. Once everyone left we were exhausted. We are still in awe at how amazing the whole thing was and how beautiful our baby boy is. The doctor told me that when I get pregnant next time I will probably need a c-section to avoid that bone. That is kinda a bummer, but at least I got to experience real labor once. Maybe a little too much with my empty epidural at the end! haha But besides we are not going to do this again for a very long time.
