So let me start this story at the beginning to see if I can explain all the craziness. Before Justin and I got married we got a cheap little apartment in Clearfield and it wasn't so bad at first. When management changed, so did the residents and like a lot of apartments, questionable people were moving in. So then we had the guys next door with the bumping loud speakers 24/7, called the cops and landlord repeatedly until they were evicted. We had 2 different neighbors, the gay couple and the straight couple both ending up in domestic violence situations in our hallway, again the police were called. We had smoking by our building, kids constantly playing outside and people stealing our parking space. So when the cops chased a guy though the front door and out the window of an apartment below us we were ready to go. At that point we got very lucky to move into my dad's townhouse up the street. I was pregnant and jobless and we needed to get out of that rotten neighborhood. Now with the exception of the occasional crazy things, the guys across the street getting drunk and lighting bottle rockets (we got them kicked out) the clueless maintenance man, and he crazy family next door with the four kids under 4 ( they were always screaming about how Jesus wants them to eat their vegetables), the place was pretty nice. But when my dad came home from Afghanistan unexpectedly last November we had to get out into our own place. Being in a hurry and a very tight budget we picked a cheap flat 4-plex apartment place in Roy. From day one it was a nightmare!
We had a neighbor with barking dogs who smoked and yelled all day and night (yes they allowed smoking in the units!) We had a family on the other side with a nutty looking fugitive type who smoked sounded like he was beating his wife and kids (yes I called on them too). We had a broken dishwasher for the first month, 2 different types of ants in the kitchen and bathroom, busted doors, and a weird disgusting smell. The apartment we were shown was not the one we were given, Justin was livid to say the least. I thought, we can stick this out for 6 months and hopefully start our quest for a home this fall but I was wrong. After twice of calling maintenance and not getting anything but him saying the smells and sounds coming from our utility closet were normal, we called Questar Gas last Wednesday.
When the guy came to the place and met Justin he was shocked at how old and what bad working order the water heater and furnace were. He got such a high carbon monoxide rating he shut off our gas and gave us a list of things that had to be done before we could return. We were defiantly freaked out about how close we were to possible suffocation and more then a little pissed!
Well here we are, a week later still "camping" at Justin's parents house. They have been so awesome to let us stay through all of this crap. The apartments let us break our lease and pack up and leave. When we turn in the keys tomorrow we are getting back the last weeks rent because we have not been able to even stay there. They wouldn't replace the heater or the furnace, they just did a half-ass fix it job and Justin was really not going to fight with them over how serious this was. We don't get all our rent back, but we don't have to pay to buy out the lease. That took come chatting with their corporate office to get some results. It has been a lot of back and forth and a huge pain in the ass! Justin has been amazing and I am so lucky to have a husband that works at us being a team so well. We went back to Clearfield and got a new apartment close to our old one. It is way nice and a lot more roomy! It costs a lot more but I guess the lesson we learned here was, you get what you pay for. So the stress this week has been crazy and I just can't wait to be back at home in my own bed with my own stuff. We turn in our old keys tomorrow and should have the last of the furniture all moved. After this nightmare winter full of moving and being displaced I made Justin promise we are not moving again until we can get a house and that is that! SIGH!
